A supermassive black hole is hurtling away from its home galaxy

This view taken by Hubble shows a cannibalistic black hole devouring millions of new stars in the Galaxy, causing many of its stars to slowly move towards the black hole outside the Galaxy. Most of its stars have passed out of the habitable zone.

A super massive black hole is a monster that is difficult to identify when and what it can do.  It is a huge black hole that is roaming freely in the universe and due to its high speed, it can go from Earth to Moon in about 14 seconds.  Its mass is as much as 20 million suns.

"This is a strange straight line that seems to point to the heart of this Little Milky Way, and we've never seen anything like this before," says Pieter van Dokkum at the university.  "It looks like eyes shot out of that galaxy, and now they're moving through space at velocities something much larger."

It is most likely that the giant fact is a supermassive black hole that once lived at the center of the sky.  At the tip of the trail, van Dokkum and his colleagues found a highlight buzz of ionized oxygen, which suggests that the black hole is sliding into the gas around it as it moves away at about 1600 kilometers per second.  The starry line is over 200,000 light-years long, which means the black hole left its sky some 40 million years ago.

The streaks of new stars can also teach us about how the gas surrounding galaxies, invisible to the eye, behaves.  "We see this trail of stars, and those stars are made from material that was around that galaxy," van Dokkum says.  "We get this unexpected benefit of learning about these vast reservoirs of matter in which galaxies reside."
